Caring For Your Feet When You Have Diabetes

Foot complications can happen in the blink of an eye. Know how to properly prevent these issues from happening.

Whether you’ve just been diagnosed with diabetes or you’ve had it all your life, there are certain measures you need to be taking to diabetic foot careensure that you don’t suffer from any health complications. Maybe our Rockland County, NY podiatrist, Dr. Jay Levine, has already told you this but foot health is of the utmost importance, particularly if you have diabetes. Here’s how to care for your feet to prevent issues from happening to you.

Check out your feet

Every day you should thoroughly inspect your feet and look for any redness, swelling, wounds, red spots, etc. It’s possible to have problems and not even notice it, so these daily inspections can help to pinpoint an issue right away. Our Rockland County foot doctors should address any suspicious foot issues as soon as possible.

Wash your feet daily

While it might seem obvious it’s important to wash your feet every day with warm water. Before you get into the shower or bathtub make sure that you check the water with your elbow to make doubly sure the water isn’t too hot that it could burn you. This is particularly important if you have nerve damage and have lost sensation in your feet.

Keep skin moisturized

You don’t want to deal with cracked and dry skin, which can lead to more serious issues along the way. That’s why adding a moisturizer to your daily regime is vitally important. Apply lotion or cream to your feet (but never between toes, as this could lead to an infection), particularly right after getting out of the shower, to lock in moisture.

Always wear shoes and socks

You never want to walk around barefoot, even if you are inside. It’s too easy to step on something or injure yourself. By wearing socks and shoes all the time you can protect your feet from injury. Always wear socks with your shoes to prevent blisters or other sores from developing. Also, wear shoes that fit properly and provide enough cushioning to support your feet.

Keep your toenails properly trimmed

Trim your toenails regularly right after washing and drying your feet. Always trim your nails straight across and never at a curve since this can increase your chances of an ingrown toenail. If you have trouble trimming your own nails, our podiatrist will be able to do it for you.

Don’t let foot problems get the better of your health. At the first sign of an issue call our Rockland County podiatry office right away. The sooner you treat your foot problems the better.
